Speaker Papuashvili: South Caucasus is vital link between Europe and Asia, which is precisely why EU's policy towards Georgia is so baffling

“The South Caucasus is a vital link between Europe and Asia. That is precisely why the European Union’s policy is so baffling; it resembles shooting oneself in the foot, when one observes their attitudes towards, for instance, Georgia,” declared the Speaker of Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili.

According to him, Brussels’ policy is in disarray globally, not merely concerning Georgia.

“I cannot discern any great or profound thinking in the statements of certain European politicians, given that Brussels’ policy is, broadly speaking, in a state of global confusion, and not only where Georgia is concerned. You will be aware that the United States Secretary of State does not meet with the EU’s foreign affairs representative, Kaja Kallas. The European Union has, in practical terms, entirely lost its role in global politics. We observe that on major global issues, it is no longer consulted, and even on regional matters, it is rarely given a voice. Above all else, maintaining dialogue with Georgia is in the European Union’s own interest, given that Georgia, and the region as a whole, is the very link connecting the EU to those resources and routes that are of vital importance to the European economy, which today finds itself in a state of stagnation,” Shalva Papuashvili declared.

At the first Armenia–EU summit currently underway in Yerevan, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated: “Armenia provides the shortest route to the Caspian Sea and Central Asia. This route was previously closed, but now, through Armenia’s bold decision, the situation has changed.”
