Speaker Papuashvili: Recent parliamentary delegation visit to Washington offers hope that relations can be reset and started afresh

“The latest visit of our parliamentary delegation to Washington gives us hope that it will be possible to reset relations and begin anew,” said Shalva Papuashvili, Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia.

According to Papuashvili, there is an expectation that closer engagement will be achievable, and he emphasised that Georgia is awaiting proactive steps from the United States.

“Of course, we have observed some passivity, and we anticipate more active involvement. There is a degree of disappointment stemming from discussions about USAID, particularly regarding the change of government in Georgia, using American funds through anti-democratic methods. This was corroborated by the Trump administration itself, which shut down organisations involved in such damaging activities in other countries. When we discussed informal governance, the Trump administration confirmed this as well, effectively branding the forces we mentioned, those hostile to Georgia, as political enemies. Naturally, there is some frustration amid this backdrop. It is disappointing not to see more active measures, but we remain hopeful that closer contacts and a reset in relations will be possible. We are waiting for concrete steps from the United States,” Papuashvili concluded.
