Speaker Papuashvili meets Chairperson of Azerbaijan's Milli Majlis at IPU Assembly in Istanbul
The Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili, has met with Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
According to the Parliament’s press service, Speaker Papuashvili expressed his gratitude to his Azerbaijani counterpart for the fact that an Azerbaijani parliamentary delegation, led by Gafarova, had paid its respects to the memory of the Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia, Ilia II, and participated in the funeral ceremony of His Holiness.
The meeting underscored the broad and fruitful cooperation between Georgia and the Republic of Azerbaijan across multiple spheres.
In recognition of her longstanding and distinguished contribution to strengthening parliamentary ties between the two countries, Speaker Papuashvili presented Sahiba Gafarova with the Parliament’s Honorary Medal.
“The sides reaffirmed their readiness to deepen further the strategic partnership between the two countries. The positive momentum of high-level visits was highlighted, with particular emphasis placed on the significance of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to Georgia.
The ties between the two countries’ legislative bodies were assessed favourably, both at the level of speakers and across sectoral committees and friendship groups.
The sides also discussed the situation in the South Caucasus region and underlined the importance of peace and security. Readiness was expressed to continue work on the implementation of regionally significant strategic projects,” the Parliament’s press service stated.
The meeting took place in Istanbul, Turkey, on the margins of the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). The Georgian delegation, led by Speaker Papuashvili, includes Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations, and Maia Bitadze, Chairwoman of the Committee on Environmental Protection and Natural Resources.
