Speaker on Defence Forces Day: Georgia averted becoming battlefield amidst global powers' conflict
“Over the past three years, Georgia has resisted becoming a battleground in a large-scale confrontation between major powers, and everyone must grasp what we have successfully avoided,” stated Shalva Papuashvili, Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, during an event marking the Day of the Defence Forces in Vaziani.
“The Georgian state is firmly committed to maintaining peace. In these challenging times, achieving peace requires exceptional effort, wisdom, and flexibility,” Papuashvili said.
He highlighted that the ongoing efforts to avert the dangers of war and provocation are backed by the strength, courage, and determination of the Georgian army, which selflessly defends the homeland and fulfils its missions with valour.
“We feel this spirit of support and readiness. Every soldier is invaluable and serves as a reminder of our vigilance. In recent years, there has been significant interest in turning Georgia into a battleground amidst a global confrontation. Everyone should take this lesson to heart and understand what we have averted,” Papuashvili remarked.
He also honoured the families and loved ones of military personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty.
“On the Day of the Defence Forces, we pay tribute to those soldiers who bravely defended our country’s freedom and independence. To their parents, children, and spouses – your loved ones are our collective pride. We honour their bravery and sacrifice.”
Papuashvili extended congratulations on this significant day, assuring that the country’s defence is a shared responsibility among all citizens.
“Defending Georgia is our common cause. We are proud of you and grateful for your service. May God protect and shelter all of Georgia,” he affirmed.
He emphasized the need for complex solutions during challenging times. As Shalva Papuashvili stressed, this mission is particularly critical given that two regions of Georgia remain occupied by Russia, while Europe has been embroiled in its largest and bloodiest conflict since World War II for the past three years. Additionally, surrounding conflicts are not diminishing; in fact, they are escalating.
“Given the tumultuous state of the world, wisdom, foresight, and societal unity are essential for our survival. History has shown us this truth, and it remains relevant today.”
Papuashvili noted that every citizen must recognize their role in protecting the state, particularly in this age of hybrid warfare.
“The unity of the army and the populace, the nation and the church, and the entire society is vital for the country’s strength, integrity, and resilience. We are all soldiers of our country, united under one flag,” he concluded.
