Speaker: Kallas and Kos ignored attempted seizure of Presidential Palace

“October 4 came, we saw violence, and the next day we heard statements from Kaja Kallas and Marta Kos, who did not even acknowledge that a crowd, supported by them, tried to seize the presidential palace,” the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili, said during the Georgian Public Broadcaster’s First Channel programme “Actual Topic with Maka Tsintsadze”.

According to him, this was an unprecedented attempt to overthrow the government while elections were still underway.

“The elections were not over yet, we were waiting for results, and already there was an attempt to overthrow the government,” he noted.

Papuashvili emphasized that the violence was openly encouraged in advance.

“On September 23, ten days before the elections, the spokesperson of the European Commission voiced support that we considered direct incitement to violence. I repeatedly called on the EU to clarify or distance itself from that statement. There was complete silence,” he said.

Papuashvili stressed that Georgia “avoided a return to the 1990s, civil strife and bloodshed,” while European officials “pretended nothing had happened.”

“A terrorist act took place in Georgia. The presidential palace was being attacked, yet the European Commissioners— Kos and Kallas—pretended nothing happened. Their spokesperson had expressed solidarity with the perpetrators. Now they call again for dialogue as if nothing occurred. This is hypocrisy, and fortunately, the Georgian people are wise enough not to listen to such irresponsible statements,” he added.

He emphasized that the Georgian side expects an explanation from the European Commission and the EU Ambassador to Georgia.
