Speaker hopes Georgia to get Mediterranean PA observer status
“I am convinced that we will be granted the status of an observer member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean shortly,” said Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili.
According to the Speaker, the status is significant for security, economic development and regional cooperation.
“Georgia participated in the sitting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean for the first time, and it was the first summit of the assembly speakers. Participation in this format was conditioned by our chairmanship of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation. I was represented there as the President of this Assembly. However, it is important that bilateral interest was observed between the Assembly and Georgia with respect to deepening relations.
We decided to apply for the status of an observer member. We had the status of the Assembly’s partner country before. I am convinced that we will be granted the status of observer member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean shortly.
This is important because it gives us access to countries which belong to the Mediterranean basin, and the status is significant for security, economic development and regional cooperation. This gives us the opportunity to discuss with our colleagues the common challenges facing the world and our broader region,” he said.
