Speaker: EU Embassy must clarify how EU money fund calls for overthrow and mass punishment in Georgia

“The EU Embassy must immediately explain how it happens that European citizens’ money is being used in Georgia to talk about overthrow, fighters, and mass punishment,” declared Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili.

According to him, the EU Embassy must immediately clarify whether it endorses calls related to overthrowing the government.

“The Sunday rally was not only attended but also organized by EU-funded NGOs. Several organizations, including Transparency International and Sapari, officially coordinated the event. You all heard the participants’ statements and observed that Baia Pataraia, who directly controlled who spoke on stage, filtered the content—determining what could be said and what could not. Baia Pataraia, a person hired and paid by the European Union from its budget, managed these decisions. As a result, every statement made there was approved by the organisers. When we hear calls to overthrow the government or messages advocating violence and punishment—statements made from the stage of an event organised with EU funds—this is, without question, a grave concern, a catastrophe,” declared Shalva Papuashvili.

According to the Parliament Speaker, the EU Embassy must immediately provide clarification on this matter.

“These are no longer political accusations or political assessments – this is already a fact that with EU funding, rallies are being held on Rustaveli Avenue where calls are heard for using fighters to overthrow the government and punish everyone. This once again shows that such support and funding contradict both Georgia’s Constitution and legislation, as well as international law.

Once again, the EU Embassy must immediately clarify whether it endorses calls to overthrow the government. I want to highlight that this rally was organised by NGOs funded by the European Union, including Transparency International and Sapari. Participants confirm that Baia Pataraia (head of Sapari), hired and paid by the EU, controlled who could speak and what could be said. As a result, calls for overthrow were made on Rustaveli Avenue with EU funds, and the EU Ambassador must provide an immediate explanation,” stated Shalva Papuashvili.
