Speaker: Disinformation amid natural disasters is national security issue
“The spread of disinformation during natural disasters poses a significant threat to state security. Where were the whistleblowers regarding this disinformation while Brussels was spending millions?” inquired Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili.
According to the Speaker, several organizations in Georgia are financed from abroad to disseminate false information.
Papuashvili highlighted February 25 as a prime example of how the opposition, its funded media, and NGOs coordinated to create a “propagandistic disinformation storm” to sow discord in society.
“These organizations receive millions from abroad to cast disinformation, manipulate narratives, and strip context from events. They focus on various topics, from the war in Ukraine to other issues. When disinformation is disseminated during natural disasters or emergencies, it becomes a matter of national security. Where were the NGOs and fact-checkers that Brussels and other capitals fund with millions? Why did they choose to remain silent yesterday? Because they are part of the disinformation network. One faction spreads misinformation, while another remains silent, suggesting that everything is fine.
I urge everyone to recognize the importance of public unity during such critical times. Unfortunately, this is not the first instance of opposition groups, media, and NGOs turning their backs on society when compassion and solidarity are needed,” he stated.
Regarding the challenges caused by heavy snowfall in western Georgia, the Speaker noted that the Prime Minister is personally overseeing the response efforts and inspecting disaster-affected areas to ensure the clearance of roads and the restoration of communication networks.
The Speaker also pointed out that the Defence Forces and units from the Ministry of Internal Affairs are actively assisting the residents of western Georgia.
