Speaker decries attack on Georgian democracy as EP spreads election lies, EU Ambassador remains silent
“The attack on Georgian democracy is unfolding on multiple fronts. There’s a European Parliament resolution that spreads lies about the elections, and an EU Ambassador who does not distance himself from this,” declared Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili.
According to him, everyone who spreads hate speech, disinformation, and does not recognise democracy is funded by the EU budget.
“This is the disinformation that Brussels is spreading against Georgia. This resolution was adopted in the European Parliament in the presence of Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos, with her praise and applause. When such disinformation is written in Brussels’ official documents, whether related to elections or, I remind you, this resolution also contains a demand for Mikheil Saakashvili’s release, it once again casts a shadow over trust in EU institutions. Unfortunately, the EU Ambassador has not distanced himself from this resolution, thereby facilitating the spread of these lies.
The attack on Georgian democracy is unfolding on multiple fronts. On one hand, there exists a European Parliament resolution that spreads lies about the elections, claiming they were allegedly falsified, and on the other hand, the EU Ambassador does not distance himself from this resolution. He does not expose the disinformational nature of this resolution and does not say that it does not represent his position. Moreover, there are NGOs funded by the EU Embassy that do not recognise elections or democratic institutions, yet the EU Ambassador continues their funding. All of this constitutes an attack on Georgian democracy, and unfortunately, the EU Ambassador is a participant in this attack.
We heard the Brussels spokesperson’s statement about disinformation. Everyone, including those in Brussels, should apologise before accusing Georgians of disinformation. We presented a million facts; not a single fact was refuted by this spokesperson. They waved their hands, saying, ‘It’s disinformation,’ but where are the answers to the questions we pose? Why does the EU fund organisations that do not recognise democratic institutions, the Georgian people’s choice, and spread disinformation and hatred? Everyone who spreads hate speech, disinformation, and does not recognise democracy is funded by the EU budget. Of course, this is directly the responsibility of the EU Ambassador, who is a participant in this,” declared Papuashvili.
