Speaker accuses Ambassador Fischer of “destroying 30-year partnership in three years”, hopes exit marks fresh start for Georgia-Germany ties

“It is perhaps telling that the German Ambassador took his leave à la française, without saying goodbye,” the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, has remarked.

According to Papuashvili, Peter Fischer failed to bid farewell to either the President, the Prime Minister, or the Parliament of Georgia, thereby demonstrating a fundamental lack of respect for the country’s statehood.

“This is the core issue that plagued his entire tenure as ambassador. With this final gesture, he has once again laid bare his true attitude towards the Georgian state, the Georgian people, our history, and our sovereignty, revealing an absolute disrespect for our statehood.

As for his time in office, it is deeply regrettable, and I have said this many times before, that this individual managed to destroy a 30-year partnership in just three years. I sincerely hope that his departure will pave the way for a restoration of relations between Georgia and Germany, serving as the foundation for a fresh start. We have repeatedly emphasised the profound gratitude the Georgian people hold for the German state, which has stood firmly by Georgia’s side since the very first days of our independence.

We fondly remember the exceptional relationship between Eduard Shevardnadze and Hans-Dietrich Genscher, which laid the groundwork for the swift establishment of political ties between our nations. Regrettably, that enduring legacy, which Germany had maintained since Genscher’s era, was dismantled by Mr Fischer in three years, characterised by his unrelenting negativity towards the Georgian state and its government,” Papuashvili stated.

As a reminder, Peter Fischer announced on social media earlier today that his tenure as the German Ambassador to Georgia has officially concluded.
