Shalva Papuashvili: EU's eastward expansion reveals it has been infected with Soviet spirit, making it resemble USSR

“Post-Soviet individuals have gained influence in Brussels, and when we observe the sessions of the European Parliament concerning Georgia, we are reminded of the Congress of People’s Deputies of the Soviet Union,” said Speaker of Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili.

According to him, the European Union now bears a striking resemblance to the Soviet Union.

“We are not going to change our stance; let them reconsider their own attitudes. The European Parliament’s actions are driven by a policy of hostility towards Georgians, which is deeply shameful. These reports are often authored by Rasa Juknevičienė, who is known for her fascist rhetoric against the Georgian people. When a report is penned by someone who employs fascist language targeting Georgians, it signifies a disaster for Europe. Sadly, today, post-Soviet influences have taken hold in Brussels, and the EU is increasingly likening itself to the Soviet Union.

When we watch the European Parliament sessions concerning Georgia, it feels like witnessing the Soviet Congress of People’s Deputies. It’s reminiscent of the session held after April 9, where Georgians were cursed in exactly the same manner as they are being vilified in the European Parliament today.

Ultimately, by expanding eastward, the European Union has accepted that the Soviet virus has infiltrated it, an ideology that remains widespread within the EU. It is, in effect, making the union look more and more like the Soviet Union,” Papuashvili concluded.
