SAO to assume functions of Personal Data Protection Service; business ombudsman to move to Economy Ministry
According to a statement by Shalva Papuashvili, Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, the Personal Data Protection Service will be abolished as of March 2, 2026.
Papuashvili explained that the State Audit Office of Georgia (SAO), which will operate as an independent constitutional body, will assume its functions.
“As an independent constitutional body, the Audit Office benefits from a significantly higher degree of institutional independence, fully aligning with international standards,” he stated.
Furthermore, as Papuashvili noted during the briefing, from January 1, 2026, the Business Ombudsman will be transferred to the Ministry of Economy.
“The third initiative in this series concerns the Business Ombudsman, which, under the new institutional framework, will be moved to the Ministry of Economy from January 1, 2026. This change aims to facilitate a more operational response to business needs and improve coordination at the political level.
Overall, these reforms will ensure that the governance system aligns with the institutional framework established by the Constitution, optimise state resources by approximately GEL 20 million annually, streamline structural functions, clarify responsibilities, and promote effective management,” said Shalva Papuashvili.
