Queen Elizabeth, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, died at her home in Scotland on Thursday aged 96.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

Following the death of The Queen, The King issued a statement, saying “the death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family. We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother.”

According to the Royal Family, “it is His Majesty The King’s wish that a period of Royal Mourning be observed from now until seven days after The Queen’s Funeral. The date of the Funeral will be confirmed in due course.”

Flags at Royal Residences will remain half-masted until 8:00 AM on the morning after the final day of Royal Mourning.

Royal Salutes will be fired in London today at 1:00 PM in Hyde Park by The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery and at the Tower of London by the Honourable Artillery Company. One round will be fired for each year of The Queen’s life.
