Public Defender: Over 13 individuals in pre-detention cells, brutality unjustified
“There are more than 13 individuals kept at pre-detention cells, they speak about physical retribution, assault when detained,” said Georgian Public Defender Levan Ioseliani.
According to Levan Ioseliani, ill-treatment is unjustified.
The Public Defender visited the detainees at pre-detention cells and listened to their reports about mistreatment on the part of Special Task Force officers, and inspected their injuries.
The Public Defender called on law enforcers not to exceed their duties and the Special Investigation Service – to investigate the cases promptly.
“First of all, a law enforcement officer must follow the law. Of course, someone may have done something wrong, but you should approach that person according to the law, not lynch them and punch them in the face. Such a thing is unacceptable. I saw it with my own eyes when I entered,” he said.
Levan Ioseliani said that more people are victims of violence than of previous protests.
“This process should end somewhere, otherwise we receive more violence and this may end up in casualty. This is everyone’s responsibility, especially of those who detain people, who investigate and who conduct police measures so that such cases do not reoccur,” Ioseliani stated.
