Public Defender Calls on MIA not to Use Special Equipment against Participants in Peaceful Assembly

The Public Defender of Georgia Levan Ioseliani echoed the crackdown on the rally on Rustaveli Avenue (21:15-22:00).

“As we have repeatedly indicated in recent days, in the event that specific individuals commit violent acts, appropriate proportionate measures should be taken against them individually and peaceful assemblies should not be dispersed.

The Public Defender calls on the Ministry of Internal Affairs not to use special equipment against participants in the peaceful rally and not to continue to disperse the assembly,” reads the statement.

Levan Ioseliani visited the protesters injured on the night of December 2 and reported that almost everyone was observed with injuries in the face and head areas.

“For four days now, I have been calling on the police, and today I urge them again, that when there are police actions if someone violates the law, individual action should be taken against that person. It is unacceptable to treat people like this,” he said.

According to the Public Defender, he visited approximately 160 people and reported that over 80% of them had body injuries, the injured spoke about excessive force.

“We have reacted on all cases and submitted the material to the Special Investigation Service. I call on the Service to investigate the cases effectively and call on the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) to renounce violent detentions,” he said.
