Prosecutor’s Office plans to appeal today’s acquittal of Dr. Giorgi Akhobadze

The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia will appeal the Tbilisi City Court’s decision that acquitted a defendant of illegal acquisition and possession of drugs in particularly large quantities. The Prosecutor’s Office informed, referring to today’s decision of the Tbilisi City Court in Giorgi Akhobadze’s case.

According to the agency, the Prosecutor’s Office will appeal the Tbilisi City Court’s verdict to the Tbilisi Court of Appeals within the legally established timeframe after receiving the motivational part of the decision.

“Law enforcement arrested the defendant on December 8, 2024. He was charged with illegal acquisition and possession of narcotic substances in particularly large quantities.

An investigation conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs established that the defendant illegally acquired and possessed 3.73133 grams of the narcotic substance ‘alpha-PVP’ (α-PVP).

Evidence obtained in the criminal case was fully examined in the Tbilisi City Court. Despite this, the court did not accept the evidence of the prosecution, acquitted the defendant of the presented charges, and released him from custody,” the Prosecutor’s Office stated.

Judge Romeo Tkeshelashvili on Tuesday acquitted Doctor Giorgi Akhobadze, who was arrested in December 2024, while returning home from a protest rally on Rustaveli Avenue. He faced charges of illegal acquisition and possession of large amounts of narcotics, a crime that carries a sentence of 8 to 20 years or life imprisonment.
