Prosecutor's Office indicts individuals in teacher Giga Avaliani's death case for aggravated assault and other violent crimes

The General Prosecutor’s Office presented new charges of group violence to individuals detained in the death case of Giga Avaliani, a 28-year-old teacher, Prosecutor Giorgi Mikaia announced at the briefing.

The Prosecutor’s Office released a video which confirms that the detainees also participated in other crimes.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs, in close coordination with the Prosecutor’s Office, conducted various investigative activities and expertise and questioned approximately 100 witnesses to solve Avaliani’s death case.

The investigation determined that the detained individuals plotted the attack according to the scheme developed by three youngsters, Aleksandre Gabashvili, Giorgi Rikadze and Demetre Chikovani.

Giga Avaliani was attacked late at night on October 1, 2025, near the entrance to his apartment block in the Temka district of Tbilisi. The teacher sustained fatal injuries, and he died in the hospital on October 24.

Within the framework of the investigation, other crimes with the participation of the detained individuals were also revealed. They physically assaulted individuals, recorded the gang violence on camera, stored the footage on their mobile phones, and distributed it through social media.

In Giga Avaliani’s case, Giorgi Rikadze is charged with Part 4 of Article 117 of the Criminal Code of Georgia. He faces imprisonment for up to 14 years. Another individual Demetre Chikovani faces up to 9 years in prison.

“All three individuals who plotted and participated in the crime have been sentenced to imprisonment as a preventive measure based on the prosecutor’s office’s motion. Investigation continues to determine and reveal other participants or accomplices of the crime,” Prosecutor Giorgi Mikaia said at the briefing.
