Prosecutor's Office: Former PM Irakli Garibashvili pleads guilty, sentenced to 5 years and fined one million lari

“A plea agreement has been reached with Georgia’s former Prime Minister, Irakli Garibashvili, under which he has been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment,” the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia reported.

The same source also states that Garibashvili has been fined one million lari.

“The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has reached a plea agreement with Irakli Garibashvili, under which the former Prime Minister has been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for an offence under Article 194, Part 3 of the Criminal Code of Georgia. He has also been fined one million lari. Additionally, the monetary sum seized during the search of his residence, obtained through criminal activity, will be confiscated in favour of the state.

Irakli Garibashvili has admitted to the offence and agreed to the terms of the plea deal. The court has already approved the Prosecutor’s Office’s motion regarding the agreement,” the prosecution states.

Additionally, it is known that on October 24, the Tbilisi City Court imposed a bail of one million lari on Georgia’s former Prime Minister as a preventive measure in the case concerning the laundering of particularly large sums of illegal proceeds.

It should also be recalled that during a briefing at the State Security Service on October 22, it was stated that former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili had been questioned at the Anti-Corruption Agency, where he fully cooperated with the investigation and admitted to receiving illegal income over the years.

Irakli Garibashvili has been charged under Article 194, Part 3, Subparagraph “c” of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which covers the legalisation of illegal proceeds accompanied by the receipt of income in an especially large amount.
