Prosecutor’s Office files charges against individual for unlawful interference and assault on journalist
The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has charged a person with unlawful interference and assault against a journalist in the village of Martkopi, Gardabani Municipality.
“The investigation established that on May 12, 2025, in Martkopi, Gardabani Municipality, the accused physically assaulted a journalist and cameraman from the Pirveli TV and confiscated their camera and phone, with the intent of unlawfully hindering their professional activities,” the prosecutor’s office stated.
The individual has been charged under Article 126, Part 1, Subparagraph “c” (causing physical pain to the victim) and Article 154, Part 1 (illegal interference with a journalist’s professional duties, including coercing them to cease disseminating information) of the Criminal Code of Georgia. These offences carry a maximum penalty of up to two years’ imprisonment.
“The prosecutor’s office has already submitted a request to the court for a preventive measure against the accused. The investigation into the case remains ongoing,” added the prosecutor’s office.
