Prosecutor's Office conducts investigative actions on Rustaveli Avenue following Strasbourg Court ruling on June 2019 events
The Georgian Prosecutor’s Office has announced that investigative actions are being carried out on Rustaveli Avenue in connection with the June 20-21, 2019 case, following a decision by the European Court of Human Rights.
“In accordance with the Strasbourg Court’s decision and recommendations, we are conducting investigative actions on Rustaveli Avenue with victim participation to ensure an effective investigation. This will enable investigators to fully reconstruct the crime scene from the June 20-21, 2019 incident and identify potential perpetrators,” the Prosecutor’s Office stated.
The European Court of Human Rights ruled on a criminal case involving alleged abuse of authority with violence and weapons by Ministry of Internal Affairs personnel during public order maintenance operations in Tbilisi on June 20-21, 2019.
The court found a violation of Article 3 of the Convention in its procedural aspect and mandated that the Georgian state conduct specific investigative measures. These include investigative actions with victim participation to determine whether the Ministry of Internal Affairs properly planned its operations and to establish instances of excessive use of force.
The case remains under investigation by the Tbilisi Prosecutor’s Office Investigation Department.
