Prosecutor’s Office charges four individuals with assaulting police and vandalizing state property

The Georgian General Prosecutor’s Office has indicted four individuals for assaulting police officers during protests on Rustaveli Avenue and for damaging state property.

According to a report from the Prosecutor’s Office, following an investigation by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), one protest participant threw Molotov cocktails at Special Task Force officers on December 1.

Another individual, armed with a stick, attacked a police officer at Freedom Square on December 4, inflicting an injury to his head.

The third individual, wielding a knife, assaulted a police officer on Rustaveli Avenue on December 1, physically harming him.

The fourth individual vandalized video surveillance cameras in Mziuri Park during the night hours of December 4.

The Prosecutor’s Office stated that an attack on a police officer is punishable by four to seven years in prison, while individuals who cause injury to a police officer face seven to eleven years of imprisonment. Damaging state property is punishable by one to five years in custody.

The Prosecutor’s Office will submit a motion to the Tbilisi City Court requesting pre-trial detention as a measure of restraint for the charged individuals under the terms established by law.
