Prosecution ready for plea deal offer to Mzia Amaglobeli
The Batumi City Court held a hearing today in the case of Mzia Amaglobeli, during which an expert was questioned and the prosecution delivered its closing statement.
At the hearing, Prosecutor Tornike Gogeshvili announced that the prosecution is prepared to offer Amaglobeli a plea deal. This proposal was met with strong dissatisfaction from the defense and Amaglobeli’s colleagues.
According to defense attorney Maia Mtsariashvili, the offer amounts to pressure. She noted that the prosecution has been urging Amaglobeli to plead guilty since the day of her arrest—something she firmly refuses to do.
“Mzia Amaglobeli’s position is clear—she will never admit to something she did not do,” said Mtsariashvili. “This is not a new offer. The government is simply demanding an admission of guilt and an apology, which will certainly not happen.”
Following the hearing, tension arose outside the courtroom. A brief confrontation occurred between police and individuals exiting the building as Amaglobeli was escorted into a vehicle. Protesters gathered nearby claimed that police were heavily mobilized and attempted to prevent them from saying goodbye to Amaglobeli.
The trial is scheduled to continue on August 1 at 1:00 PM with the defense’s closing arguments.
It remains unclear whether the judge will issue a verdict on the same day.
