Prosecution opens criminal case against new defendant for complicity in Sergeant Shavadze's unlawful detention

Georgian General Prosecutor’s Office launched criminal prosecution against the former head of the Constitutional Security Department of Adjara Autonomous Republic’s Investigation Service on the fact of co-participation in unlawful detention and killing of Roin Shavadze, a late brigade sergeant in the Georgian Ministry of Defense during 2008 Russia-Georgia war.

The investigation determined that Sergeant Shavadze was attacked in a Batumi cafe on August 16, 2008, allegedly on a charge of spying for foreign special services.

Roin Shavadze received severe body injuries. Members of the Special Task Squad shot dead Roin Shavadze at Adjara-Gurgia administrative border.

A protocol which was compiled of the personal search read that Shavadze was allegedly found with drugs. The detainee faced from 9 to 12 years in prison. Twelve persons were arrested in the case. A guilty verdict is ruled against ten indictees. Investigation keeps on to reveal other accomplices.
