President Kavelashvili: We must do everything to ensure closer relations between Georgia and Serbia
“We must do everything to ensure closer relations between Georgia and Serbia,” said Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili at a joint briefing with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.
According to Kavelashvili, new initiatives were discussed during the meeting, focusing on strengthening cooperation in multiple sectors.
“Our shared values, particularly our Christian Orthodox faith, are of great importance to both Georgians and Serbs. Today, I will have the opportunity to visit the Holy Cathedral in Belgrade and meet His Holiness, the Patriarch. This holds great significance for our people. We also discussed ways to foster closer and more practical relations between our countries. There are many areas of cooperation, including arms production and agriculture. Georgia is geographically and agriculturally well-positioned to produce healthy products, and I am confident that our joint efforts will yield success in these areas,” Kavelashvili said.
Reflecting on Georgia’s stance following the Russia-Ukraine war, Kavelashvili emphasized the country’s principled position.
“Since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, Georgia has withstood strong pressure and defended its national interests and principles. We have significant experience in dealing with conflicts with our northern neighbor. Our principled stance is crucial for all countries that value peace in the face of these challenges. I am confident that more countries will join this initiative, which we have consistently defended, contributing to regional and global peace,” he stated.
Kavelashvili also highlighted the importance of closer ties with the Balkans through the Black Sea.
“Recent tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan are easing. The South Caucasus is a key region connecting East and West, and Serbia will have great opportunities in connection with this corridor. Strengthening bilateral relations will expand the agenda of our cooperation. I am confident that following today’s business discussions, our ministries will continue to work closely to further develop relations between our countries,” he added.
The President expressed gratitude to Serbia for supporting Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and extended an invitation to the Serbian President.
“Respect for Serbia’s territorial integrity is very important to us. I thank you for protecting Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and for your support in accordance with UN resolutions. I am pleased to be here with my delegation and to greet the Serbian people. I also convey greetings from the Georgian population, who hold the Serbian people in high regard. I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to Georgia next year. I am certain that this visit will further strengthen our relations,” Mikheil Kavelashvili concluded.
