President Kavelashvili views Trump's congratulatory letter as a first step forward in Georgia-U.S. relations

“The U.S. President’s congratulatory letter on the occasion of May 26, Independence Day reveals significant accents. It demonstrates that President Donald Trump has made first steps towards the U.S-Georgia relations,” said Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili in the GPB First Channel’s Program “Actual Topic with Maka Tsintsadze.

“We are pleased to receive congratulations from the U.S. President. It accentuates our sovereignty, security issues and our current fight for independence and freedom, as well as the Trump Administration’s readiness to restore relations with the Georgian government.

The congratulatory letter provides for trade-economic relations. We can restart relations. I believe a very positive sign comes from the U.S. side,” he said.

Mikheil Kavelashvili also underscored that the Georgian government always acted based on national interests.

“We see geopolitical developments, what goals Trump put forward. We see consistency and what the agenda is. Georgia would not be the first on this agenda and nobody demanded this, especially from our side. We see the process. The letter demonstrated coincidence in values and the readiness for relations. We have to consider that the first step was made,” Kavelashvili stated, adding he had received the congratulatory letter through the U.S. Embassy in Georgia.
