President of Georgia Mikheil Kavelashvili has pardoned Mamuka Khazaradze and Badri Japaridze, leaders of the political party Strong Georgia – Lelo.
In a statement, Kavelashvili said he hopes the two will continue their political activities “with respect for the law.”
“The registration process for electoral subjects in the local self-government elections ended yesterday. Among the registered parties is Strong Georgia – Lelo, whose leaders are currently serving prison sentences for specific crimes.
It is undeniable that the elections will take place in a competitive environment, even under these circumstances. However, elections should never serve as an indulgence for politicians who break the law. Notably, the prisoners in question had rejected my pardon offer a few weeks ago, attempting to insult the institution of the President.
Nevertheless, to eliminate any claims that the elections are being held under conditions of limited competitiveness, I have decided to pardon Mamuka Khazaradze and Badri Japaridze.
I hope that, going forward, they will conduct their political activities in full respect of the law. I also call on all election subjects to help ensure that the local self-government elections are held in a healthy and peaceful environment.
I wish success to all participants who approach these elections with a genuine commitment to developing municipalities and serving the interests of the population,” President Kavelashvili stated.
