Politico: EC to recommend candidate status to Georgia

The European Commission will recommend candidate status to Georgia, Politico wrote based on two EU high-ranking officials.

According to Politico, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and her 26 College colleagues meet this morning to discuss the progress Ukraine and nine other countries have made in their quests to join the EU.

“They will recommend EU leaders open accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova — under the conditions that the countries make rule-of-law reforms. Good news for Tbilisi, too: They will also recommend that EU governments grant candidate status to Georgia, two officials said,” it said.

The European Commission will publish the annual EU enlargement report on November 8, assessing Georgia’s fulfilment of the 12-point recommendations, which the EC outlined for the country in June 2022 and based on which the European Council will make a political decision on Georgia’s EU candidate status. In June 2022, the European Council granted a European Perspective to Georgia.
