PM: We are banned from adopting laws they adopt in their own countries; Georgia won't be easy target
“We are banned from adopting laws that they have enacted in their own countries or institutions. There is a double standard at play in every direction, whether it concerns freedom of expression, democracy generally, or the protection of law enforcement structures,” stated Irakli Kobakhidze, the Prime Minister and Chairman of the Georgian Dream, following the nomination of regional mayoral candidates.
Kobakhidze was asked about the European Union’s recent adoption of a media freedom act, which, as is known, also includes provisions for the detention of journalists, applying to all EU member states. In response, Irakli Kobakhidze commented that double standards are evident in how Georgia is treated.
“We see double standards everywhere, in every aspect, when it comes to freedom of expression, democracy, or the protection of law enforcement agencies. We are prohibited from adopting laws that they have enacted in their own countries or institutions. It is a clear double standard. Such an approach implies that Georgia should regard itself as an easy target. This is unacceptable to us. We are a sovereign state, enjoying exactly the same rights as any Western nation. We cannot allow anyone to perceive Georgia as an easy target. We must have laws comparable to those in developed countries, including protections for freedom of expression, media freedom, and other fundamental rights,” Irakli Kobakhidze affirmed.
