PM regrets over unfair European bureaucratic assessments, lack of respect for Georgia's sovereignty

“We regret the unfair assessments and statements that are often voiced by European bureaucrats regarding Georgia,” Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated in response to a journalist’s question during a joint press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

The journalist asked Irakli Kobakhidze, “What is your position on the frequent criticism from the West directed at sovereign Georgia?” In response, Kobakhidze stated that “Georgia’s state sovereignty is not being properly respected.”

“Beyond unfair statements, we frequently observe problematic practices, including issues related to funding. We have repeatedly seen instances where institutions connected to the European bureaucracy have financed extremism. There have also been clear precedents of interference in electoral processes before the parliamentary elections. Overall, we believe that Georgia’s sovereignty is not being properly respected, which we find deeply regrettable. For many years, the European Union has represented justice for us, and we sincerely hope it will continue to do so in the future. Unfortunately, the actions of European bureaucrats are increasingly undermining our trust and morale,” Irakli Kobakhidze remarked.

Additionally, the Prime Minister highlighted that Georgia remains determined and unwavering in its pursuit of European Union integration.

“We hope that by the time Georgia is ready to join the European Union, this attitude will have evolved. The Prime Minister (of Hungary) also expressed optimism that developments in Europe will shift in a positive direction, and we share that hope. Such a change in attitude is crucial for us, as our primary foreign policy goal remains accession to the European Union. We aspire to join a fair and just European Union—one where bureaucracy and policymakers evaluate situations in different countries, including Georgia, with integrity. This is fundamentally important for us,” Kobakhidze stated.

According to Kobakhidze, Hungary continues to be the most steadfast and unequivocal supporter of Georgia’s European integration.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Prime Minister of Hungary and the Hungarian government for their fair and balanced approach. In terms of impartial assessments and sincere support, Hungary consistently emerges as the most evident and robust supporter of Georgia’s European integration. Once again, I extend our sincere gratitude to our Hungarian friends for their unwavering support,” Irakli Kobakhidze stated.
