PM Kobakhidze: We must combat drug trafficking in all its forms—legal and illegal

“Drug addiction is a serious disease, and our priority must be to protect those who are affected, especially the users. To achieve this, it is essential to tighten our drug policies. The crackdown should be particularly rigorous against dealers,” emphasised Georgia’s Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, speaking to journalists.

According to the Prime Minister, certain individuals are attempting to promote narcotic use in Georgia, with marijuana and club drugs gaining popularity.

“Drug addiction is a serious disease, and our priority must be to protect those who are affected, especially the users. To achieve this, it is essential to tighten our drug policies. The crackdown should be particularly rigorous against dealers. Already, a large-scale operation has resulted in the arrest of 18 major traffickers, and we will continue to take active measures in this direction.

Additionally, legislation must be improved to combat this serious issue more effectively and to protect our citizens, especially young people.

There is also evidence of opaque external financing aimed at encouraging drug use in Georgia. The promotion of marijuana, club drugs, and similar substances is categorically unacceptable. We cannot permit anyone to do this. Significant steps have been taken to regulate the import of psychotropic medications and to introduce substitution therapy into the national framework. In a broader sense, these measures serve to combat drug trafficking from start to finish—whether in the so-called legal form or illegal,” stated Prime Minister Kobakhidze.
