PM Kobakhidze slams Peter Fischer as ambassador who ‘did everything to damage’ Georgia-Germany ties, hopes for fresh start

“Mr Fischer was the only ambassador who not only failed to contribute to the development of our bilateral ties, but did everything in his power to damage relations between Georgia and the Federal Republic of Germany. This is deeply regrettable, and we hope to see a turn for the better,” Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told Georgian journalists in Kazakhstan.

The Prime Minister emphasised that Georgia and Germany have historically shared an exceptional bond, for which Georgia remains profoundly grateful, and noted with regret that Peter Fischer had inflicted significant harm on these relations.

“As you know, Georgia and Germany have traditionally enjoyed a truly special relationship. Germany played a monumental role in our country’s development, particularly in the early 1990s. Those were incredibly difficult times, yet Germany stood firmly by our side, and that close relationship endured for years.

In essence, Mr Fischer was the lone ambassador who, far from fostering these ties, did absolutely everything to undermine relations between Georgia and the Federal Republic of Germany. It is a source of great regret. We sincerely hope that things will turn around now, as this is of vital importance to our nation.

Let me reiterate that we are deeply grateful to Germany for its immense support over the years, and we have a strong desire to restore the warm, friendly relations we were once so accustomed to. Regrettably, Mr Fischer has caused substantial damage to these ties, but we remain hopeful that this chapter will now change,” the Prime Minister remarked.

For context, Peter Fischer’s tenure as the German Ambassador to Georgia has officially concluded.
