PM Kobakhidze: Government aims to modernise villages by establishing strong, technologically advanced, and business-focused farms
“We aim to support the modernisation of villages, including through the development of robust, technologically sophisticated, and commercially driven farms,” stated the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, during his address at the launch of the Agricultural Development Index.
The Head of Government described the introduction of the Agricultural Development Index as highly commendable, highlighting its importance in offering a clear and comprehensive overview of the progress achieved and identifying areas that require further focus, based on key metrics such as productivity, prices, and investments.
“First and foremost, I would like to thank Galt & Taggart for creating this timely and strategically vital platform for the sector.
Agriculture remains one of the main pillars of our economy and a key driver of regional development. The government’s approach to this sector is steadfast and consistent: our goal is to modernise rural areas by establishing strong, technologically advanced, and business-oriented farms. Precise analytics are essential for formulating effective economic policies. Therefore, the creation of the Agricultural Development Index, which we unveil today, is highly valued. This tool, with indicators covering productivity, prices, and investments, provides a transparent picture of where we have made strides and where further effort is needed.
The data and sector analysis we will explore in detail today are truly impressive. By 2025, our food market is projected to reach 21.5 billion GEL. Since 2019, this volume has nearly doubled, and with the current trajectory, we anticipate a market of 30 billion GEL by 2030. Our primary challenge is to meet this growing demand through local production. Currently, we remain heavily dependent on imports, particularly for meat, dairy products, and grains,” said Irakli Kobakhidze.
