PM Kobakhidze believes it is unacceptable to leave CEC at standstill

Salome Zourabichvili and representatives of the radical opposition want to leave the Central Election Commission at a standstill. Of course, the parliamentary majority will not have such a desire, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told reporters.

According to the Prime Minister, overcoming the President’s veto serves to fulfil one of the nine steps identified by the European Union.

“As for the CEC issue, it is very simple. Today there is a kind of deadlock in the CEC, since a year and a half ago the acting CEC chairperson and two CEC members were elected for a six-month term. It’s kind of a dead end. The bill that parliament then passed provided a way out of the impasse. The CEC cannot remain at a standstill.

Salome Zourabichvili and the radical opposition seek to keep the CEC in a stalemate, while the parliamentary majority aims to overcome the veto. We cannot allow the Central Election Commission (CEC) to reach a dead end. It is unacceptable to fail in implementing one of the nine steps of the European Union, which is related to holding free and fair elections in Georgia. Therefore, we must find a way to overcome this veto. Overcoming this veto serves to fulfil one of the nine points of the European Union,” the Prime Minister said.
