PM Kobakhidze: Ambassador summons is diplomatic measure; EU ambassadors’ violations are unacceptable

“Every ambassador represents a state, and when you summon an ambassador, you’re using a diplomatic measure towards the state. This is logical,” Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists.

According to the head of government, there are serious problems in European bureaucracy, and what the ambassadors are doing is an expression of this.

“Not everyone behaves the way the EU Ambassador and ambassadors from Britain and Germany behave. As for summoning, this is a diplomatic measure. Every ambassador represents a state, and when you summon an ambassador, you’re using a diplomatic measure towards the state. This is logical. An ambassador doesn’t act independently, after all. We say that European bureaucracy is in a dire state today, and this concerns not only EU structures, but the structures of corresponding states. There are serious problems in European bureaucracy, and what the ambassadors are doing is an expression of this,” the Prime Minister declared.

“Specific ambassadors are directly involved in political processes, which is a crude violation of the principle of democracy, and this is a crude violation of the principles of the Vienna Convention. Their actions require a response,” the Prime Minister went on to say.

According to him, the government hopes that the foreign ambassadors will return to diplomatic frameworks.

“They must observe rules and principles; this is, amongst other things, the European approach. Ambassadors cannot act with Soviet approaches, and their summoning is a diplomatic measure whose sole purpose is precisely this: for ambassadors to return to diplomatic frameworks.

You may recall Macron’s statement about one of the ambassadors. He made a much softer statement; this statement didn’t really imply interference in French politics, but France’s President immediately reacted. With us, there is direct, crude interference not only in politics, but encouragement of radicalism and polarisation, which is a crude violation of the Vienna Convention,” Irakli Kobakhidze declared.

According to the head of government, the Vienna Convention prohibits interference in political processes, which has a very crude form in Georgia.

“The Vienna Convention prohibits interference in political processes, which has a very crude form, very often. This included direct interference in electoral processes: the EU ambassador came out and directly called on voters to mobilise against the acting government. A cruder violation of the Vienna Convention than this simply doesn’t exist. There are countless such examples.

You may recall that ambassadors attended court proceedings to exert influence on judges, which is also a crude violation of the Vienna Convention and the principle of judicial independence.

Ambassadors shouldn’t behave this way, especially those ambassadors who represent Europe. Europe was traditionally a symbol associated with rules, a symbol of respect for rules, and now we see that ambassadors from the EU, unfortunately, often crudely violate principles and rules, which is categorically unacceptable. An ambassador in Georgia must behave as befits an ambassador and not like a politician,” the Prime Minister declared.
