The Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, together with Minister of Infrastructure Revaz Sokhadze, has inspected the progress of the Kvesheti-Kobi bridge project. The Head of Government reviewed both completed and ongoing works on the 23-kilometre Kvesheti-Kobi highway and associated tunnels.
As part of the project, a two-lane asphalt-concrete road is being constructed, incorporating five bridges and five tunnels, alongside the rehabilitation of an existing bridge. Once open, the Kvesheti-Kobi Highway will eliminate winter traffic restrictions in the Kobi direction; residents of up to ten villages in the Khada Gorge will be able to access essential services unimpeded, and travel will become safer and more comfortable.
Travel times will be significantly reduced: the journey along the Kvesheti-Kobi section will take just 15 minutes instead of an hour; the drive from Tbilisi to Gudauri will be shortened to 1 hour and 30 minutes from two hours; and from Tbilisi to Stepantsminda, the trip will take 1 hour and 45 minutes instead of two and a half hours.
The project is being implemented with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB)and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), with co-financing from the state budget. The total cost amounts to GEL 1.2 billion, and construction is scheduled to be completed in phases between 2025 and 2026.
