PM expresses full support to all judges

“I fully support all judges. The court became independent and free from interference during our rule,” Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said following a meeting with the Supreme Council of Justice.

The Prime Minister on Monday met with Supreme Court Chair Nino Kadagidze and the Supreme Council of Justice over recent US sanctions against four justices.

Garibashvili says any interference in judges’ activities is unacceptable.

“As the head of government and the ruling party’s leader, I fully back all judges. The court has become independent during our rule, free of both domestic and foreign interference. Any interference or influence on the judges is, of course, unacceptable. It is intolerable to us; especially to a sovereign country’s sovereign court and judges. I have also informed the honourable judges that we will be fully supportive. We shall do everything possible to defend the court’s independence from interference or pressure. This is our declared policy and the main goal we strive for after our team came to power,” said the PM.

The judges requested a meeting with the Prime Minister after the US State Department sanctioned three current and one retired judge.

The US imposed sanctions against Mikheil Chinchaladze, Levan Murusidze, Irakli Shengelia, and Valerian Tsertsvadze.
