PM deems banning political parties a constitutional instrument provided for by constitutions of all democratic countries

“Banning of political parties is a constitutional instrument provided for by the constitutions of both Georgia and all democratic countries,” said Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.

According to the PM, the fact that some call for the politicization of this issue speaks to their true intentions.

“This is a judicial issue, and if anyone wants to comment on this issue, should read the lawsuit and get familiarized with the Constitutional Court’s decision. This is our call. Politicizing this issue is a violation of European principles. When these parties demand politicization of this issue, speaks to their true intentions. This issue should not be politicized. I urge everyone to get familiarized with the judicial aspects and context of the lawsuit, then the decision, and make judicial assessments afterwards.

Banning of political parties is a constitutional instrument provided for by the constitutions of both Georgia and all democratic countries. Consequently, the claim that initiating such proceedings signifies the development of undemocratic processes is, of course, pure speculation—especially given the concrete precedents in countries like Ukraine, Moldova, and others, where political parties have been banned. In this case, nobody speaks about a violation of any democratic principle. On the contrary, this is a democratic, judicial process. What matters is that everyone should acknowledge the context of the lawsuit and make judicial comments based on that,” he said.

The PM added that the team would decide who would present the lawsuit in the Constitutional Court.
