PM declares “no retreat” in fight for Georgia’s sovereignty, confirms elections in October 2028
“Early elections would represent a step backwards, detrimental to our country’s vital national interests. Naturally, we cannot allow this,” stated Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze to journalists.
The Prime Minister confirmed that elections will be held in October 2028 per the Constitution of Georgia.
“The current trajectory is such that a sanction is merely a compliment, an ordinary compliment. As for retreating, the Georgian people stand behind us. Consequently, we cannot retreat. We will defend the Georgian people and our national interests unequivocally. We have been engaged in this struggle for a considerable time.
Initially, there were informal sanctions, followed by formal sanctions. The battle will persist. We are fighting for the freedom, independence, and sovereignty of Georgia. And we have no grounds for retreat from this position. Early elections would be a retreat detrimental to our country’s key national interests. Of course, we cannot do this.
The elections will be held in October 2028, as stipulated by the Constitution of Georgia, and not by the decision of some external government. The foremost desire of the Georgian people is to safeguard our national independence, preserve our sovereignty, and protect the dignity of the Georgian people. Today, a battle is being waged for this very purpose.
Since the beginning of 2022, we have endured significant pressure. They failed to draw us into the war. They failed to open a second front in Georgia. This failure offended the ‘Deep State,’ and since then, blackmail and threats have continued, sometimes through formal, sometimes informal sanctions. The Georgian people desire the independence and prosperity of our country; this is the paramount value for the Georgian people, and we will defend it,” Kobakhidze asserted.
