PM comments on Macron’s statement in light of past violations of Vienna Convention by French diplomats
“Emmanuel Macron made an interesting statement. For many years, we have been asserting that ambassadors, including European ones, have systematically breached the Vienna Convention, flouting international law and flagrantly interfering in Georgian politics,” said the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze.
According to the Prime Minister, these interventions were evident to all.
“When we raised concerns about this at the time, there was zero response. Against this backdrop, President Macron’s remarks are quite noteworthy. I would also like to remind everyone that numerous French ambassadors have made sharp statements in the past, thereby violating the Vienna Convention. I sincerely hope that these standards will develop and that we will witness a return to healthy, consistent diplomatic practices rather than double standards. The emergence of such positive trends would be very encouraging.
However, we still observe that even European ambassadors frequently breach the Vienna Convention. This must come to an end if we are to improve the reputation of the European Union and its institutions in the eyes of the Georgian people,” Kobakhidze stated.
French President Emmanuel Macron made a statement that “criticism of France by U.S. Ambassador to France Charles Kushner is unacceptable for somebody who is supposed to be a diplomat.”
