People’s Power Guram Macharashvili: Georgia has nothing to envy Moldova for; we are merely correcting false claims
“Broadly speaking, how could anyone envy Moldova, especially Georgia, when findings from international European authorities and various institutions consistently rank Georgia ahead of Moldova?” MP Guram Macharashvili, Executive Secretary of the People’s Power party, has declared.
According to Macharashvili, Georgia has nothing to envy; on the contrary, Moldova may well have reason to envy Georgia.
“We have expressed no reaction whatsoever regarding Moldova’s progress or regression. Naturally, however, we do not leave European bureaucracy officials and their statements unanswered when they claim that Moldova is ahead of Georgia. We mention Moldova solely within this context; as for the rest, whether they choose to unite with another state, remain in the CIS, withdraw, or adopt any other decision, that is entirely their affair.
I repeat that Georgia has nothing to envy. On the contrary, Moldova may have reason to envy Georgia. Let them examine the rulings, reports, and evaluations of international institutions; they will see exactly what European bodies themselves say about the respective standing of Georgia and Moldova.
I reiterate that we are not competing with anyone. We are simply responding to anyone telling us the falsehood that Moldova is ahead of Georgia. How can Moldova be ahead of Georgia when, by these very institutions’ own assessments, it consistently lags? What Moldova does on its path toward European integration is another matter and entirely its own choice. For our part, we know what decisions we are making regarding various international unions. What is happening within the European bureaucracy today demonstrates that there is genuinely no desire to accept us on our own terms. When they tell us to surrender our sovereignty to Brussels as a condition of entry, our answer is clear: we will not join any institution under such terms. As far as we know, Moldova has publicly stated a desire to unite with another state and enter Europe via that route. That is for them and the Moldovan people to decide.
We are not competing with anyone, and we certainly do not envy anyone. We are following our own path, but when comparisons are made, we simply state what a correct comparison actually looks like,” Guram Macharashvili stated.
His comments follow statements made by the Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament, Igor Grosu, who claimed during a broadcast on Moldovan television that “the Georgian Prime Minister misses no chance to criticise Moldova, largely out of envy over Moldova’s significantly faster movement towards European integration.”
