Penitentiary Service denies Nana Sander’s allegations, launches internal inspection
The Special Penitentiary Service has responded to statements made by the accused Nana Sander, in which she alleged that she was subjected to inhuman treatment while held at a penitentiary institution.
According to the Service, upon admission to a detention facility, detainees and their personal belongings undergo a thorough inspection, with a formal record drawn up. The agency stated that personal searches are conducted by staff of the same sex and that legislation prohibits requiring an accused or convicted person to completely undress during a full personal examination.
The Special Penitentiary Service said it does not confirm the facts described in Sander’s statement and considers the allegations an attempt to discredit the institution and damage its reputation.
“An official internal inspection will be initiated by the relevant authorised unit. All procedures provided for by the legislation of Georgia will be carried out. If a violation of the accused’s rights is confirmed, appropriate liability measures will be applied,” the statement said.
The Service added that both the accused and the public will be informed of the results of the inspection.
