Gakharia for Georgia: Aggression begun 18 years ago continues today as Moscow accelerates de facto annexation of Tskhinvali region

“18 years ago, Russia openly invaded Georgia and occupied the Georgian territories of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region. We paid a heavy price in defending our homeland from the aggressor, and we pay tribute to the heroes who sacrificed their lives,” reads the statement issued by the Gakharia for Georgia party.

As noted in the statement, that aggression continues to this day; Georgian territories remain occupied, while Moscow has accelerated the process of de facto annexation of the occupied Tskhinvali region.

“Against the backdrop of these alarming developments, the Georgian Dream government, rather than mobilising the international community, has chosen to blame its own country, responding to ongoing annexation processes with criminal silence. It is cynical that on the anniversary of the 2008 war, Georgian Dream representatives express greater concern over so-called Russophobia than over the occupation itself and their own citizens who are its victims.

We call upon our international partners to firmly support Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, and to condemn the ongoing annexation processes in the occupied territories. Today, this support is all the more crucial given the backdrop of Georgian Dream’s collaborationist policies. Glory to the heroes! Glory to Georgia!” reads the statement issued by the Gakharia for Georgia party.
