As of July 2026, Georgia’s gross international reserves grew by approximately 50 per cent year-on-year, reaching an all-time high of USD 7.53 billion. On a month-on-month basis, international reserves increased by USD 404.6 million. Reserve adequacy metrics also improved, with the International Monetary Fund’s Assessing Reserve Adequacy (ARA) metric currently estimated at 118.7 per cent.

According to the NBG, international reserves serve as a vital guarantor of the country’s macroeconomic stability. Consequently, the long-term policy of the National Bank of Georgia remains consistently directed towards accumulating reserves and managing reserve assets efficiently.

Whenever foreign exchange market conditions and the broader macroeconomic environment permit, the NBG replenishes its foreign currency reserves. Throughout 2026, leveraging favourable market conditions, the central bank has continued to build its reserves, with net purchases totalling USD 2,078.4 million between January and June 2026. Net purchase figures for July 2026 will be published on August 25.

Notably, in 2024, the NBG diversified its reserves by making its initial investments in gold, a strategic decision by the central bank. Since then, the value of gold assets has appreciated significantly, providing a further boost to total international reserves. In June 2026, the NBG purchased an additional USD 100 million worth of monetary gold for its gross international reserves. As a result, gold accounts for 13.5 per cent (USD 1,014.1m) of total international reserves as of July 2026.

The National Bank of Georgia will release updated figures on gross international reserves on September 7, 2026.
