Patriarch Shio III: Georgia deeply saddened by Ingushetia tragedy; Khizir’s sacrificing his life to rescue a friend sets example of heroism

“We are all deeply saddened by the tragedy in Ingushetia; Khizir’s death shook the whole of Georgia,” reads the condolence letter of Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude, Shio III, sent to Khasan and Madina Derbichevs, Khizir Derbichev’s parents, his family members and relatives. Little Khazir sacrificed his life to rescue a friend as a true example of bravery and heroism. This common pain united our hearts, and along with sorrow, demonstrated the power of people’s sympathy and unity.

We believe that Khizir’s bold behaviour and bright memory will remain in the hearts of many people as an outstanding example of love for one’s neighbour and self-sacrifice. May the Lord grant you comfort, courage, and spiritual strength,” reads the Patriarch’s condolence letter.

The body of an 8-year-old Ingush boy, Khizir Derbichev, who jumped into a river to save his friend, was found on June 22. The child had been missing for more than eight days. The tragedy occurred on June 15, 2026, in the village of Yandare, Nazran District.

Khizir Derbichev was on the riverbank with two friends when one of the boys fell into the water due to the strong current and became trapped by a branch.
