Parliament to discuss President's impeachment on October 18

The Parliament will discuss the issue of impeachment of President Salome Zourabichvili tomorrow, October 18. Discussion will begin at 12:00.

Chairman of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, said the presidential administration confirmed that President Salome Zourabichvili would be present at the session.

“According to the statutory order, the parliament must approve the schedule for considering the issue of impeachment and the schedule for voting on the order. We propose a draft order, according to which the Parliament will establish that the Parliament of Georgia must consider the issue of President of Georgia Salome Zourabichvili’s impeachment based on the conclusion of the Constitutional Court of Georgia that the president has violated the Constitution of Georgia, and vote on this issue at the autumn session of 2023, during the next plenary sessions on October 17-20. This order comes into force immediately after adoption. Here, I will inform you that I spoke with the presidential administration. Madam President confirmed her participation. So, tomorrow, at 12 p.m., we will begin the impeachment discussion,” said Shalva Papuashvili.

Eighty-eight MPs voted for the regulation, while eight voted against it.

The legal part of the president’s impeachment issue passed after the Constitutional Court yesterday concluded that the president violated the Constitution of Georgia. After this, the process moved to the legislature. The parliament needs the support of 100 MPs to impeach the president.
