Parliament Speaker: Sound policy but not declarations matter; GD proved that even most conflict-ridden region can know peace and stability
“What matters is not written commitments and declarations, but sound policy. Georgian Dream has demonstrated precisely this. With the right approach, peace and stability can be preserved even in the most conflict-ridden region in the world, stated the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, speaking to Georgian journalists in Istanbul following his address to the plenary session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Assembly.
According to Papuashvili, Georgia’s constitutional objectives are clearly defined, and the question is not one of neutrality versus non-neutrality.
“The question concerns a challenge that does not depend on us alone. What happens around us is not resolved by declarations, by entries in the constitution, or by the introduction of such terminology. What is needed is a wise policy that steers the country away from conflicts and from the hardships the world is currently enduring.
The Georgian government exemplifies the fact that, over the past fourteen years, Georgia has experienced its first period without any outbreak of war or military conflict. This is no accident. For several years now, the preconditions for war in Georgia have been in place. War would have been a certainty had certain foreign actors found representatives of the radical opposition, kneeling, ready to do their bidding, in the offices of the Georgian government. We were spared that certain war because we placed our national interests above all else. What matters is not written commitments and declarations, but sound policy. Georgian Dream has demonstrated precisely this. With the right policy, peace and stability can be maintained even in the most conflict-ridden region,” Speaker Papuashvili stated.
