Parliament Speaker: Georgia to hold next elections based on fully proportional system

Archil Talakvadze, Chairman of the Parliament, opened the first bureau sitting.

Talakvadze wished the newly-elected MPs a success and touched on the legislative reforms carried out by the Parliament of the 9th Convocation.

The Parliament Speaker accentuated on amendments made to the election system based on which the 2020 parliamentary elections were held in Georgia.

He said that the OSCE/ODIHR election observation mission evaluated the recent elections as contested, fundamental freedoms observed.

“As a result of the constitutional reform, Georgia would hold the next parliamentary elections based on a fully-proportional system so much desired by all political generations after the 90s. No former government managed to carry out this reform. The Georgian Dream did that with support of our public and engagement of the international partners,” Archil Talakvadze said.

The Parliament Speaker once again called on the opposition to become involved in the parliamentary work to agree on crucial issues needed for the country and people “through the dialog rather than categorical demands.”
