Parliament not to send bill On Assemblies and Manifestations to President, GD's Kobakhidze says

The bill On Assemblies and Manifestations will not be sent to the Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili, Irakli Kobakhidze, the Georgian Dream Chairman told Imedi TV on Friday.

“The Parliament adopted the law On Assemblies and Manifestations based on article 36. Accordingly, the law will enter into force immediately without the President’s signature,” said Kobakhidze.

The Parliament endorsed the amendment to the very law prohibiting participants of any assembly or demonstration from setting up temporary structures (such as tents, shacks, etc.) if:

  • Setting them up endangers the assembly or demonstration participants or other individuals;
  • interferes with police efforts to maintain public order and security;
  • obstructs the usual operation of the business, institution, or organisation;
  • Without these structures, holding the gathering or demonstration is not significantly hampered.

Later, GD faction Chair, Mamuka Mdinaradze deemed Kobakhidze’s statement “one simple joke” leading to “the collapse of the opposition, the President, and her representatives in half an hour.”
