Parliament approves amendments to Law on Prosecutor’s Office

The Parliament of Georgia has approved the amendments to the Law on the Prosecutor’s Office in its third reading.

At today’s plenary session, 78 deputies voted in favor of the draft.

The project changes the procedure for electing the Prosecutor General. Specifically, no later than six months before the Prosecutor General’s term expires—or immediately in case of premature termination—the Prosecutorial Council must begin submitting candidates to Parliament, completing the process within one week.

Each Prosecutorial Council member may nominate one candidate. Candidates are then voted on openly at a Council session and must receive a majority of the entire Council’s votes to be supported.

If only one candidate is nominated and fails to secure the required votes, the nomination process restarts.

The Council submits the supported candidate, with justification, to Parliament. If Parliament does not approve the candidate by majority vote, the nomination procedure is restarted.

Under the previous law, the Prosecutorial Council selected a candidate within one month based on consultations and then submitted that candidate to Parliament.
