Parliament approves amendments to Law on Vine and Wine in first reading

The Georgian Parliament approved the amendments to the Law on Vine and Wine with 77 votes in the first reading.

Deputy Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture Zurab Ezugbaia presented the amendments to the lawmakers.

According to Zurab Ezugbaia, the definition of “small-sized cellar” is changing, and the annual production capacity of a wine enterprise is reduced from 40,000 to 25,000 liters.

A new term is added to the law – “labelling of alcoholic beverages.” A QR code issued by the National Wine Agency wil be put on the label of a bottle. Exported alcoholic beverages must undergo compulsory organoleptic examination. The requirement will not apply to natural wine produced in small wine cellars.

Ezugbaia remarked that the Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture must issue an order “On Approval of the Rules and Form of Labelling of Alcoholic Beverages” by November 1, 2026 and ensure that relevant normative acts are brought into compliance with this law.

The Georgian government must ensure that the price of certified alcoholic beverages intended for sale is determined by February 1, 2027.
